Relay For Life of New Fairfield: A HOPE for a Cancer-Free world

Each year 1.6 million people are diagnosed with cancer in the US.

Roughly 600,000 people will die.

To put that in perspective, according to a new report just out, in 2020 345,000 people died from Covid-19 and 598,000 people died from Cancer. Top in leading cause of death only surpassed by heart disease.

We have been counting the deaths due to Covid-19 because it is a new, scary and contagious disease. Thankfully, vaccines and limiting behavior can go a long way in containing and eradicating viruses like this. We have come across them before and we know how to tackle them. That number will be considerably less in 2021 thanks to these measures and though Cancer deaths are down a considerable amount in the last years, 580,000 people is unacceptable. That is 580,000 loved ones.

The American Cancer Society is funding researchers who are on the cusp of a cure. A safe cure at that, using the body to heal from within. How cool is that? The American Cancer Society is also funding programs that, during the height of the pandemic were actually realized to be more vital than previously thought.

The Road to Recovery is one of these programs that took a hit. This program is where volunteers sign up to take precious cargo - our loved ones - to their cancer treatment and/or back home. Cancer treatments are rough on the body, because you are literally fighting your body for survival. Knowing you can get to your treatment safely and with care is so important. Sadly, during the pandemic it was not safe for our volunteers to ride with the immunocompromised patients and it was awful knowing they could not be helped.

Relay For Life of New Fairfield continues, not solely for the research, but for the people. We want our loved ones to know they are cared for, that one day our children will not have to get cancer. We Relay for LIFE, LOVE, FAMILY, HOPE and the knowledge that everyone matters and everyone deserves access to treatment, information, doctors and more.

Relay For Life of New Fairfield appreciates you for your involvement, no matter how it looks, and we hope when we are able to have another big event we can blow the roof off the town and remind every single person battling cancer that they are not alone because WE ARE THERE!
