University of Vermont Department of Student Life presents Andrew Romano of Sherman, Ct., with Outdoor Leadership Award

The University of Vermont's Department of Student Life presents Andrew Romano of Sherman,CT (06784) with the 2021 Outdoor Leadership Award, in recognition of their achievements, accomplishments, and contributions to the UVM community as a leader and pioneer.

Each year the Department of Student Life at the University of Vermont recognizes the achievements of several outstanding individuals in the form of the Student Life and Senior Awards. These awards are presented annually to students, clubs, organizations, and advisors to recognize outstanding campus leadership, contributions, and service towards the UVM community - and beyond.

The Outdoor Leadership Award honors a student who exemplifies superb leadership abilities in the outdoors. This student shows a commitment to not only furthering their own technical skills and abilities in the context of outdoor adventure activities, but also is focused on teaching others these skills. This individual recognizes that the outdoors is an incredible tool to foster connections: connections between people and place; connections between members of a group; and connections in our own thoughts and spirits as we engage in the outdoors. This person is committed to making outdoor adventure accessible, sustainable, and, of course, fun for their fellow students.

In their nomination of them for this award, Andrew's nominator wrote: "Andrew is among the most conscientious, responsible, kind, and adventure-ready students. A teacher and community-builder at heart, he has demonstrated a commitment to taking more BIPOC folks for outdoor joy and fun as a leader with the UVM Club People of Color Outdoors (POCO). If you love being outside too, you may find him as a ski instructor at Stowe Resort, with Umiak Outdoor Outfitters or assisting customers at the Outdoor Gear Exchange. He is an experienced and excellent guide who cares deeply about the natural environment.".
