Melody Currey, Former State Official, E.Hartford Mayor and State Representative, Dies at 71

Melody Currey, a former state commissioner, member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and mayor of East Hartford who “touched the lives of so many” has died. She was 71 years of age.

Her death was confirmed Monday by current East Hartford Mayor Mike Walsh in a Facebook post, in which he called Currey "a wonderful boss, a great mentor and dear friend."

Currey, 71, retired in 2019 after serving four years as the Department of Administrative Services commissioner. Previously, she was the commissioner of the state Department of Motor Vehicles, East Hartford’s mayor, and a state representative. She also served as head of the East Hartford's Democratic party for years, playing an active role in helping area Democrats win local, state, and national elections.

Governor Lamont said, “Melody Currey was a powerhouse of an advocate on behalf of the people of East Hartford and the entire state of Connecticut. Whether it be through her elected roles as state representative and mayor, or as commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Administrative Services, she was a fierce proponent of enacting policy improvements that create a more effective, accessible, and equitable state for everyone. She mentored any and all who were interested in serving their community as she possessed a passion for putting the needs of others above self. Her passing is a significant loss for our state. I send my deepest condolences to her family.”

The cause of death was not disclosed at this time.
