School Closed but Offices Open and the High School Remains as a Shelter

A message from NEW FAIRFIELD PUBLIC SD

Good afternoon,

This is Dr. Alicia Roy, Superintendent of Schools in New Fairfield. Today is Sunday, May 20th.
Great progress continues to be made clearing roads, and the schools have power. Eversource uses words including “unprecedented” to describe the destruction in New Fairfield. I know that this is no surprise to you. I have personally driven through some of the areas in town that are still being cleared to determine whether buses can safely navigate, and we still have too many people without power and too many roads that are obstructed. Schools will not be open Monday. Offices will be open. The high school will remain as a shelter for Monday, serving three meals and offering showers and drinking water. I cannot yet talk about Tuesday, but I am trying to be optimistic that we will be able to hold school. We are all taking it one day at a time. The outpouring of support for our fellow residents is no surprise. We are all going to be stronger from this experience. Again, schools in New Fairfield will be closed tomorrow. Thank you and be well.

Thank you to Barbara Evans for sharing.
