Railyard Arts Studio in Croton Falls will offer art-friendly atmosphere

You may or may not know this, but I am fascinated by art, artists, and the art world. I love people. I especially love the things they have to say, the ideas they have, and the work they do.

I was no less impressed by the future art project proposed in the center of Croton Falls called the Railyard Arts Studio. The studio is not quite up and running yet, but is due to go into action this November. January at the latest.

The founder and President, Jill Leary, is not unfamiliar to our area. She grew up in Somers, taught art in both the Brewster Schools (CV Starr and Wells). She was also been a skating coach at the Brewster Ice Arena.

When I asked Jill what brought her to this new venture she said, “I was not happy with where I was going. The Railyard Arts Studio took everything I was looking for and brought them together.”

The space is not quite ready for classes to begin quite yet. Walls have yet to be finished. Flooring and fixtures fare on their way. But 2X4s are in place so that it is easy to imagine what is yet to come. Ms. Leary could explain how the space will work and where everything will be. Two good sized rooms will be devoted to pottery (with 8 wheels and 2 kilns). The other spaces can easy handle all sorts of tables, easels, cubbies for personal items, a kitchenette for coffee, and a comfortable sitting area for talking and the sharing of ideas. You can see the process on Instagram and Facebook. “The look will be rustic.” said Jill. “I’m looking to convey an art-friendly atmosphere that is both homey yet serious as well as beautiful.”

While the Railyard is looking to attract serious artists, Jill said she is open to ideas. The programs will touch on art therapy as well as work with teachers for projects that dovetail well with school Core programs. Integrating art and creativity with literature, science, mathematics as just a few subjects, as opposed to a competitive atmosphere, is the goal.
