IRS Has Videos to help the Do-It-Yourself Tax Filer

Looking for something to do while you are stuck at home? Despite the fact that the Federal Government has pushed the tax deadline for payments back 90 days you still have to get them done. (You still have to file a return or request for extension by April 15th but payments are deferred for 90 days) Most accountants are practicing social distancing and limiting face to face meeting with all their clients and are either working by phone or email making it more difficult. Would you would rather do your own taxes? Are you a first time filer? The IRS has several how-to-videos to help you get it done right.

The IRS YouTube channel has short videos that answer common taxpayer questions and even walk them through how to complete certain forms. The channel has videos on a variety of topics. Here are few of them:

First time filing a tax return? – This video introduces first-time filers to Free File, tax preparation software only offered through IRS.gov. Using it can help taxpayers find credits and deductions for which they may be eligible. It covers other free tax preparation options including the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, protecting personal data and much more.

American Sign Language and multilingual videos – On the IRS YouTube channel, taxpayers can watch short, informative videos in English, Spanish and American Sign Language.

Missing W-2 – This video explain what taxpayers should do if they don’t receive a  Form W-2 from their employer and they want to file their tax return. It covers how to complete Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, and file it with their return. It also explains how to file an amended return if they get their W-2 late.

IRS2Go Mobile App – Watching this video can help people learn about its features, and how to navigate it. The app is available in English and Spanish.
