Snowy Weather: Quick Hitting Accumulating Snowfall Expected Late Tonight into Monday Morning

A quick hitting accumulating snowfall is expected late tonight into Monday morning. This is in response to developing low pressure tracking to the Mid Atlantic coast by Mondaymorning, and then racing offshore, well southeast of Long Island by Monday afternoon.

Hazards and Impacts

A steady snow will likely begin between 3 and 6 am tonight. The snow could be moderate to locally heavy, before tapering off from west to east mid morning through around midday.

A general 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected across much of the region late Sunday Night into Monday morning. Across the hills of NE NJ and the Lower Hudson Valley, 3 to 5 inches of snowfall are expected.

Snowfall rates of around 1 inch per hour are possible early through mid morning Monday.

Slush/Snow covered roads and reduced visibilities are expected to make for a hazardous Monday morning commute.

The potential for a widespread warning level snowfall is low (at least 6 inches). Localized 6 inch snowfall amounts are possible though, particularly across the hills of NE NJ and the Lower Hudson Valley.

Uncertainty and Scenarios

A narrow band of moderate to heavy snow is likely early to mid Monday morning, but exact location will likely be hard to ascertain ahead of time. Snowfall amounts could locally end up an inch or so higher or lower than indicated in forecast ranges due to banding placement and timing.Snowfall accumulations on paved surfaces will also likely vary greatly. Urban areas may see limited accumulations on roadways from this event, while higher elevations will likely see several inches of snowfall on roadways. Roadway snow accumulation this time of year is heavily dependent on how much snow falls before sunrise, location of heavier snow banding, urbanization, and elevation.

Due to this uncertainty, please continue to monitor the latest forecasts and updates.
