Free Soil Testing on April 21 in New Fairfield & Sherman CT

SOIL TESTING DAY IS APRIL 21st!

Be Lake Smart: Have Your Soil Tested Before Considering Fertilizing

It’s smart, free and easy!

Knowing what nutrients your soil is deficient in is the first step to improving your lawn. Wasting money on unnecessary nutrients is not only expensive for you, but also costly to our Lake.

Plans are set for the Candlewood Watershed Initiative's Annual Soil Testing Day on Saturday April 21st. Again, this year lawn and garden soils are being accepted for lab analysis of nutrient content to determine if fertilization is indeed necessary and, if so, in what quantities and with which nutrient supplements.

This year’s event will be held at two outside locations: in New Fairfield at Stop & Shop (25 Rte 39, from 8:30 until 3 PM), and at the Sherman IGA (from 9 to 3 PM). Residents from throughout the Candlewood Lake Watershed and beyond are welcome to participate. Simply drop by one of these sites before 1 PM this Saturday to receive a free Soil Testing Kit and directions on its use.

Two-thirds of those participating in the past found that no additional phosphorus was needed -- a significant finding in light of the potential harm that can result if storm water transports excess nutrients and pollutes our lakes and streams. There, these nutrients can contribute to the growth of algae, milfoil and other invasive aquatic plants and do similar damage to the ecosystem. (Phosphorus can be particularly harmful to our waters and for this reason Public Act #12-155 was passed in 2013 restricting its application in CT.)

Again this year, participants can draw samples in advance.

Instructions are on the CLA’s soil testing page for early and easy access
