New Milford Hospital is excited to announce that it now offers breast tomosynthesis digital mammography, also known as 3D mammography, at the Women’s Imaging Center at New Milford Hospital. Breast tomosynthesis is a breakthrough new screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer.
The new 3D technology provides a clearer, more precise view compared to the traditional digital mammography that takes two-dimensional images. It allows radiologists to see through layers of tissue to better examine areas of concern.
The Women’s Imaging Center’s Selenia® Dimensions® breast tomosynthesis system is made by Hologic, a world leader in digital mammography. The system provides exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design and a screening platform that is designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance.
“With this latest technology in breast imaging and a highly trained staff, we remain committed to providing the most advanced screening and diagnostic methods and quality care to the community,” said Dr. Valerie L. Staradub, director, Breast Care Program, Western Connecticut Health Network.
“We are excited to implement this new, state-of-the-art technology that has the potential to detect breast cancer earlier so treatment begins sooner,” said Dr. Barbara Blanco, medical director, Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital Breast Imaging and Women’s Imaging Centers. “The new equipment is able to better visualize invasive cancers that may have been missed previously because of overlapping or dense best tissue.”
Studies conducted on 3D mammography have demonstrated an increase in overall breast cancer detection over 2D imaging along. Most importantly, it has improved detection of invasive breast carcinomas by approximately 40 percent. Additionally, the number of callbacks for additional imaging has decreased by as much as 30-40 percent, resulting in decreased anxiety and inconvenience to patients.
“New Milford Hospital continues its commitment to provide superior clinical and compassionate care within our local community” said Thomas Koobatian, M.D., Executive Director & Chief of Staff. “This invaluable new 3D mammography technology for breast cancer screening will have a positive impact in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer.”
Western Connecticut Health Network’s Breast Care Program, inclusive of services at both Danbury and New Milford hospitals, is recognized by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, and is part of the cancer network that is Approved with Commendation by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, for maintaining the highest standards for quality in cancer care.
