Youth Poetry Open Mic Night at The Hickory Stick Bookshop

In honor of National Poetry Month, The Hickory Stick Bookshop will host a Youth Poetry Open Mic Night on Friday, April 28th from 5-7pm with a special guest appearance by Washington’s Poet Laureate, Davyne Verstandig, who will MC the evening. Refreshments will be served.

Anyone under the age of eighteen may submit a piece or two that they would like to read via email by sending it to info@hickorystickbookshop.com with the subject “Youth Poetry Submission” or in person at The Hickory Stick Bookshop during business hours.

Submission deadline: Friday, April 21st at 5:30pm. Please include your name, age, and contact information with your submission.

Those who are chosen to read will have their poems displayed throughout the store and on our website after the event.

Davyne Verstandig is a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at the UConn Hartford Campus. Her books include two books of poetry, Pieces of the Whole and Provisions and her work appears in Sex and Sexuality in a Feminist World, Songs of the Marrow Bone, Where Beach Meets Ocean, This One Has No Name and Laureates of Connecticut. She has also performed improvisational work "composing on the tongue" painting and poetry at The Knitting Factory and Housing Works Cafè in New York City and given readings throughout New England. She has given writing workshops in poetry and memoir "(My Life is in the Ink)" and a jump start writing workshop at Wisdom House Retreat and Conference Center, Litchfield CT. Davyne Verstandig was recently appointed Poet Laureate of Washington, CT. She is also a Justice of the Peace.
