New Milford High School Fire Update

NMHS Fire Update from Superintendent DiCorpo

Dear NMPS Staff, Parents, and Guardians:

As promised, I am writing to you with an update regarding the start of school in the fall of 2022. The restoration company has been working diligently to continue to clean areas of the high school building that were impacted by fire, smoke, and water damage and we continue to await the number of classrooms that will be available to us in the fall. All floors continue to be assessed and I should know more about the availability of additional rooms this week.

The air quality test results are due back to us this week, and the structural integrity analysis results have been returned. Once we have the air quality test results back, the team will discuss clearance for safe entry into the building by authorized personnel.

Additionally, thirty to fifty portable classrooms are being sourced. The company has notified us that they have approximately thirty-three available for our use at this time and have identified the potential for additional units which we hope to learn more about soon. The Mayor has signed off on the expenditures for the rental of portable classrooms, however, we are awaiting a signature from the insurance carrier. Work has already begun to align sewer, water, and electrical hookups to the portables in preparation for their arrival.

We continue to reach out to area businesses in order to inquire about the use of their parking lots for high school student and staff parking. However, at this time, those we have asked have stated that for various reasons, they cannot be options for us this school year.

With only thirty-eight days until the start of school, and the proposed arrival time of some portables of approximately four to six weeks, arrival could be on, before, or even slightly after August 29th. Therefore, it is imperative that the first day of school and all teacher meetings be moved up on the calendar. The first day of school for all students will now be Tuesday, September 6, 2022. This change applies to all students, at all schools, PK-12. A revised district calendar is attached and may be viewed on the district website too.

Please remember to tune in to the Mayor’s Town Hall Meetings on Facebook, where every two weeks we will be discussing the start of the school year and the progress made on the project.

Our next joint meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at 5:30 pm.
