New Milford Police Department Mourns Passing of K-9 Kira

It is with a heavy heart that the New Milford Police Department announces the passing of NMPD "K-9 KIRA". K-9 Kira had recently retired from active duty in January, after 10 years of dedicated service. Kira succumbed to complications following surgery to remove a recently discovered tumor. Kira passed peacefully with her handler Sgt. Lafond.

Kira was recently honored with a ceremony at the Town Hall including a Mayoral Proclamation highlighting an impressive career. Sgt. Lafond was honored to have been partnered with Kira, going on to state: "Kira was more than a police dog; she was a member of our family. Kira had an amazing demeanor. Kira was able to be a loving pup with my wife and three kids, but also had the ability to turn it on when it was time for work. I am saddened that her retirement was tragically cut short, but I am more than thankful for the fun times we had together. She was a loyal friend that I will miss every day."

Kira will be remembered fondly by members of the Police Department and New Milford community alike. Sgt. Lafond would also like to thank the amazing staff at Candlewood Valley Animal Hospital for providing the utmost professional care and compassion during a difficult time. Our thoughts are with Sgt. Lafond and his Family.
