Did you know there are over 1o,ooo historic barns in the state?

Or that Newtown has over 140 of them? Or that the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation has created the nation's first historic barn trail?

According to Helen Higgins, CT Trust Executive Director, "We have 20,000 brochures distributed at rest stops across the state. You'll also be able to download each tour on the website Connecticut Barns.org and there's an iPhone app 'CT Barns' because we're in an age where you gotta have your phone."

The detailed brochure contains 24 panels of colorful maps, photos and descriptions. Many of the barns have their own websites such as the Averill Farm, 250 Calhoun St. in Washington or the Hunt Hill Farm at 4 Upland Rd. in New Milford. However, vistors on the barn trail are warned not to tresspass on private property if they are looking at barns not open to the public. Photographs may be taken from roads.

There is an interactive map on the website which has over 8,.000 barns and you simple click on the town you want to visit. If you've got a barn that should be on the list, you can let the history buffs know. There are self-guided tours divided into seven regions across the state.
