Gloria V. Abondolo, 91, former Hawley and Sandy Hook Elementary School librarian, has died

Gloria V. Abondolo, 91, of Southbury, retired librarian at the Hawley Elementary School of Newtown and the former Sandy Hook Elementary School, wife of the late Mario D. Abondolo and the late Paul Varvayanis, mother of Charles Varvayanis and Jean Bellchou, and grandmother of Carmine, Chase, Alexander, and Serena, died on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs. Abondolo was born in Waterbury, CT on January 1, 1932, a daughter of the late George and Crysanthe (Nichols) Stavros. Mrs. Abondolo was an educator and librarian and held a Master’s degree.

She was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Danbury and the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society.

In addition to her parents and spouses, Mrs. Abondolo was predeceased by her siblings Claire, Marie, Helen, Irene, and Andrew.

The Rite of Burial will take place on Tuesday. July 11, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd., Danbury. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, 850 Meriden Road, Waterbury, CT at 12:15 P.M. Family and Friends will be received at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd., Danbury on Tuesday morning after 9:30 a.m.

Contributions in Mrs. Abondolo's memory may be made to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
