Club 24 has opened a new location in Newtown, located at 225 South Main, bringing a total of six gyms to the Connecticut-based chain which first opened its doors in Wallingford nine years ago. Fitness enthusiasts, who are drawn to the low monthly fees now total over 7,000 members in Brookfield alone. However, due to the numerous machines and roomy, large exercise areas, it rarely seems crowded, even though as many as 800 people per day may come through the door.
What separates the Newtown location is the new "cardio cinema". This has become a new trend in large gyms, where theatre-quality sound and movie screens allow viewers to run on a treadmill or workout on a stepping machine while watching a feature length movie.
"People are loving it. They can zone-out and not get bored. Instead of 20 minutes of running, they'll do an hour," said General Manager Jon Andrada who manages all six locations. The juice bar is also a step up from other large gyms, with a menu of blended, protein, smoothies and shakes in all sorts of variations whether for muscle building or losing weight.
According to Jon, the way they keep monthly fees so low are due to having small staff. "We keep our overhead low because we don't have a back office. We use billing companies and everyone pitches in to do many different jobs."
