It was a magical evening of words and laughter to celebrate the publication of In the Yellowy Green Phase of Spring: Poems from Newtown, 2013. Local residents Lea Attanasio, a 4th grade teacher at Hawley School, and Carol Ann Davis, a professor at Fairfield U, called out the muse in poets young and old-over 30 of them- in a workshop this Spring which culminated in the remarkable publication.
Monday evening's celebration was held at Main Street's Dana Holcombe House, where inn-keepers John and Jane Vouros were gracious, as usual. The retired school teachers enjoyed the poetry readings along with the view of the children frolicking on the lush, green grass.
Here's one poem that made folks laugh. It was written and read by 4th grader, Willem Doherty:
This Is Just to Say
I have smartmouthed
you for the millionth time
and driven you
oh so very close to the
edge.
I'm sorry.
The red on your face
would have scared a tomato.
