The sixth annual Sandy Hook 5K will be held in Newtown on July 21

The Sandy Hook 5K is moving to the summer!

Registration opens April 29, 2018 at 4:00 p.m.

The organizers of the Sandy Hook 5K are proud to announce the sixth annual race to honor the memories of the lives lost by the tragic events of December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. After several years of inclement weather on race day, the race is being moved to July 21, 2018.  The race will remain on the campus of Fairfield Hills in Newtown beginning at 8:15 a.m. with staggered kids’ fun runs and 9:00 a.m. for the 5K. Online registration will open on Sunday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m. on the official registration website, here

The Sandy Hook 5K can accommodate up to 2,000 runners, with registration on a first come, first served basis. The run for children ages 2-6 is a quarter mile; for children ages 7 and up, it is a half mile.  Total spots available for both kids’ runs is 200, also on a first come, first served basis. A Virtual 5K is also available for those wishing to participate in other communities as a Virtual Participant.

The registration fee for the 5K is $30, $10 for the kid’s runs and $26 for the virtual runners.  Additional fees may apply. All on-site participants will receive an official race shirt, goodie bag, and a Ben’s Bells Kindness Coin race medal.

Once again, there will be a youth t-shirt logo design contest. Children ages 2-10 years of age are encouraged to draw a logo inspired by the race or by what Newtown means to them. The 5 top logos will receive a $15.00 gift certificate to the Toy Tree in Newtown. The winning design will be featured on the race shirt given to all kids’ fun runs participants. Entries must be post marked by Wednesday June 6, 2018and can be mailed to or dropped off at Newtown Center Pediatrics, 10 Queen Street, Newtown, CT 06470.

The theme of the race continues to be Love Runs Through because love is running through everything being done to prepare for this event, and through every step taken to reach our goal of delivering a world-class, one-of-a-kind family event filled with love.

“There are many reasons to move the run to summer; snow, freezing rain and cold temps are the big three,” said Race Director Julie Brunelle. “There is a Gatorade ad that sums up the new date well - ‘You have a choice.  You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off your face.’ July 2018 is time to sweat!”

This year, the Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation will serve as the fiscal sponsor of the Sandy Hook 5K. All proceeds from the race will be donated to the chosen nonprofit organizations of those that lost loved ones on December 14, 2012.

It takes a large team of volunteers and the generosity of many sponsors to put on a successful race of this magnitude. To learn about sponsorship opportunities, please email sponsorsh5k@gmail.com.
