FCBuzz Weekend: Art Festival, Live Music, Local Artists Shine, and More!

HamletHub is proud to partner with the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County and FCBuzz to Elevate Arts and Culture in Fairfield County! Each Friday, look a listing of weekend events and activities!

The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the arts and culture across the 15 towns in our region of coastal Fairfield County and each Wednesday issues our free E-Buzz newsletter with a selection of the hundreds of events posted to our website by our members.

This weekend it’s the Newtown Arts Festival, at Fairfield Hills, launched Friday night by Alternate Routes, with Gold Roots as their opening act. Gates open 5:30pm with the concert beginning at 6:30pm. There will be 8 food trucks, a Beer and Wine Garden and more. Then on Sat and Sunday, 11am-5pm, the Festival continues with over 50 area artisans displaying and selling their works, food trucks, a Beer and Wine Garden, terrific creative activities for kids, and all day music and dance.

If you want to take it indoors, Music Theatre of Connecticut presents Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical on Friday through Sunday. This exhilarating and inspiring musical biography is a not-so-typical "juke-box musical" featuring Rosemary Clooney’s journey. With her signature songs woven in and out, learn both the story of her successes on film, radio, and television, and her struggles with addiction and depression. 8-10pm

High energy alert at Wall Street Theater on Saturday 8-11pm! Jacksonville, Florida-based alternative metal outfit COLD caught fire in the early 2000s with the albums 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage and Year of the Spider - both of which were certified Gold. Technically complex, bleak, and brutal metal merges with elements of Metallica and a side of shoegaze and soaring, alternative rock.

Then, get ready to raise the roof with multi-instrumentalist and Grammy Award nominee Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews when he returns to The Ridgefield Playhouse stage on Sunday at 7:30pm. See this critically acclaimed artist in a night of high-energy, hard-edged funk, hip-hop beats, rap, rock dynamics and improvisation in the great tradition of jazz.

This is a fantastic weekend for gallery openings across our region.

Saturday, 2-5pm, there’s the opening reception for New Canaan’s Carriage Barn Arts Center’s 2021 Annual Member Show, celebrating the range, interests, and talents of more than 150 artist members working across all subjects, styles, and media. Live music and refreshments, all ages welcome. Five exhibiting artists will be selected to show work in a group show at the Jean Jacobs Gallery in downtown New Canaan in June 2022.

Be sure to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Saturday 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the opening reception for the Biennial Group Exhibit at Bridgeport’s City Lights Gallery. Curated by Yolanda Petrocelli, this biennial exhibit celebrates artists from all of the Americas (including indigenous and mestizos) as their works create conversations about identity, heritage, race, gender, economic status and more. Through November 2nd

Saturday 4-6pm The Ridgefield Guild of Artists opens its 44th Annual Juried Exhibition, with works selected by George Billis of George Billis Gallery, Westport and Los Angeles. The opening reception is outdoors and open to all. On view through October 17.

Do not miss the opening night at The Norwalk Art Space for Robert Cottingham and Duvian Montoya: A Glossary of Painting on Saturday, 6-9pm. It’s an exhibition that gives audiences a peek into the famed, and sometimes secretive, space of the artist workshop, and invites comparisons between the artists through four key painting vernaculars: shadow and contrast; color; pattern and crop; and focus. Opening includes performances by the Latin Jazz Ensemble and East Coast Contemporary Ballet.

Then on Sunday from 3pm, at The Barn at The Westport Country Playhouse, the 13 members of The Artists Collective of Westport that are showing work in the Collective’s latest Pop-Up Show will be talking about their work.
