MARS: For almost 60 years, the Red Planet has been the prime focus for the search for life in our solar system, with its Earth-like features and tantalizing clues that it once was a more hospitable, warm and watery world.  While our robotic emissaries have become increasingly more complex and capable of doing in-situ science, the Apollo missions demonstrated the value of “boots on the ground.” NASA’s plans to return to the Moon include demonstrations of technologies needed for the human exploration of Mars. However, challenges that need to be addressed of a long-duration, deep space mission are many and, upon arrival, the Red Planet poses a hostile environment for humans.

Bill Cloutier is our presenter and a NASA Solar System Ambassador (managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory). The program works with volunteer experts across the country to share the latest scientific discoveries from NASA space exploration missions.  JPL supports the program with briefings from prominent astronomers, scientists, engineers, technicians and collaborative organizations.  Bill is also a founding member of the John J McCarthy Observatory in New Milford, Connecticut.
