The Waldorf education is catching on. Maybe parents want their kids unplugged, maybe they're tired of high-stakes testing and the stress that accompanies it. Whatever the reason, the hands-on approach to learning and the old-fashioned chalkboards are a mecca for many.
In Newtown, the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is on Dodgingtown Road. It offers classes beginning with parent-child and continues through grade 8. Parents are encouraged to limit their children's interaction with electronic media when they're not at school, and teachers have specialized educations.
There are more than 150 Waldorf schools in the U.S., and enrollment has skyrocketed this year from coast to coach, according to CNN.
