The Waldorf Way: Enrollment Up Nationally in No Test, No Tech Schools, and We’ve Got One in Newtown

The Waldorf education is catching on. Maybe parents want their kids unplugged, maybe they're tired of high-stakes testing and the stress that accompanies it. Whatever the reason, the hands-on approach to learning and the old-fashioned chalkboards are a mecca for many.

In Newtown, the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is on Dodgingtown Road. It offers classes beginning with parent-child and continues through grade 8. Parents are encouraged to limit their children's interaction with electronic media when they're not at school, and teachers have specialized educations.

There are more than 150 Waldorf schools in the U.S., and enrollment has skyrocketed this year from coast to coach, according to CNN.

Here's info from the school: The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is based on the ideas of educator, scientist and philosopher, Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), who founded the first Waldorf School. At the core of the Waldorf philosophy is the conviction that education is an artistic process, and knowledge is best learned experientially as well as academically. With over 900 schools in 83 countries, Waldorf Education is the fastest growing independent educational movement in the world. Waldorf schools are dedicated to academic excellence and offer a challenging classical education that prepares students for the most demanding high schools and colleges.
