Newtown resident Clifford Reiss, World War II U.S. Navy veteran, has died

Clifford Reiss

Clifford Reiss, 91, of Newtown, formerly of Danbury, husband of Susan (Menkes) Reiss, died at his home on Monday, June 4, 2018.

Mr. Reiss, affectionately known as “Mr. Cliffy” by his co-workers, associates and friends, was born in the Bronx, NY, July 24, 1926, son of Abraham and Ethel (Kravatz) Reiss. He attended NY schools, graduated from the Bronx School of Science and Bucknell University.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Reiss was an area resident for the past sixty-six years coming to Danbury in 1952 and establishing the former Cliff’s Auto Parts Store on White Street. He later established the Clifford Construction Company, Inc. building many homes in Danbury and surrounding towns and was also a commercial property real estate agent with Ryer & Associates.

He was a member of the Danbury Chamber of Commerce, the United Jewish Center, its Men’s Club and the B’nai B’rith.

In addition to his wife Susan of sixty-six years, Mr. Reiss is survived by a daughter, Joanne Reiss of Methuen, MA; two sons, Andrew Reiss and his wife Gail of Cincinnati, Ohio and James Reiss and his wife Arlene of Framingham, MA , seven grandchildren, Erika Fasanella and her husband Andrew, Daniel Reiss and his wife Jess, Julie Reiss, Rebecca Klayman, Jonathan Klayman, Jaclyn Reiss and her fiancé Matthew Rocheleau and Deanna Reiss and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Reiss was predeceased by a sister Muriel Simon.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the United Jewish Center, 141 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury with Rabbi Stephan Tiwy and Cantor Penny Kessler officiating.

Interment will follow in the United Jewish Center Cemetery, 110 Grays Bridge Rd., Brookfield with military honors.

Contributions in Mr. Reiss’ memory may be made to the Cantor’s Discretionary Fund at the United Jewish Center, 141 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury 06810.
