Letter: Compassionate Newtown Voter

I was shocked when I read in Newtown’s HamletHub (Sept 2) that according to the United Way, 29% of working families in Newtown, and 40% throughout Connecticut, don’t have enough money coming in to pay for basic necessities. This is Connecticut! And these are working families!

I care about other people’s well being, and I find this deeply disturbing. I want our great state to have a strong economy, with fair wages, health insurance, housing and education for everyone. Our country’s Declaration of Independence says we are all created equal, and that we all have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. However, if people who work are unable to meet their family’s basic needs, they don’t have equality or liberty, and can’t pursue happiness for themselves or their family.

I’m grateful that we have a strong slate of Democratic candidates who will work to ensure that everyone will have equal opportunity and will be able to earn a livable wage. I thank all the people who will join me in November in voting to preserve our core values and our way of life.
