RVNA Introducing Leslie Chiaramonte, Director of Hospice

If you’re unsure about the word “Hospice,” or the concept of Hospice, or anything related to Hospice at all, might we suggest … it’s time you had a chat with Leslie Chiaramonte, Director of Hospice by RVNA.

Leslie’s hidden talent — which is not really a secret at all if you’ve spent a little time with her — is that she really is able to get people to “lighten up and talk about death.” A precious and singular ability that is mirrored in all her Hospice by RVNA team members.

And, once we lighten ourselves up and talk about death. we are quick to discover that we are also talking … about life. And living.

Ladies and Gentlemen … Meet Leslie Chiaramonte.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I grew up in the Bronx and have lived all over Westchester County, but currently reside in Peekskill also known as “a friendly town” — like Ridgefield.

What is your role at RVNA?
I’m honored to be the Director of Hospice by RVNA.

How long have you been at RVNA?
15 months.

When brought you here?
A two-year stint in Florida made me realize humidity and mosquitoes was not for me! Back to the North we came!!  And the opportunity to be a part of a “startup” with an organization like RVNA …  a no brainer! Sayonara palm trees!

What is your favorite part of your job?
Watching the team grow into this amazing masterpiece of compassionate human beings; the families who trust us on this journey;  the dignity we can give to patients during their last days or months on earth.

When did you decide to become a nurse?
I was working as an Administrative Assistant to the Chief Nursing Officer at White Plains Hospital, surrounded by nurse leaders. Listening to them during meetings and witnessing the beautiful things they were doing, I wanted to a part of something bigger.  So I went to nursing school full time at night while working full time during the day.

When did you decide to become a hospice nurse?
I cared for a dying man during orientation of my first nursing job on a very busy oncology floor.  His wife had left to get lunch and I knew he was going to die.  I couldn’t leave him alone.  And so I pulled up a chair and stayed.  He took his last breath as his wife walked in the door. I was honored to be a part of his departure. It’s sacred ground.

What do you love to do when you’re not working?
NY Rangers Hockey!!!!!!! I enjoy chasing my two little girls around, they keep me super busy. I also enjoy a nice glass of wine with great friends.  This job has taught me that time is sacred.

Especially fun RVNA team moment?
Participating in the RVNA Spelling Bee as Team RVNA’s life line…..looking back and seeing our coworkers wearing Team t-shirts and supporting, cheering ….  Still gives me the warm and fuzzies.

What is your hidden talent?
I always get a weird look when I tell people I’m a hospice nurse, but I have a unique way of getting people to lighten up and talk about death.  Maybe it’s morbid humor, who knows….

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Buy a house in Sedona, Arizona and enjoy the spectacular sunsets nightly.

** Bonus questions **

What’s your favorite movie of all time?
My Best Friend’s Wedding.

If you could only eat one food for a year, what would it be?
Guacamole and chips!!!!! (Can we add in a Margarita for fun??)
