Newtown's Award Winning Holiday Homes

Newtown's Award Winning Homes 2018

The 3rd annual Newtown Holiday Decorating Contest has come to a close and organizer Lois Imbriano Barber has announced the winners of this nondenominational contest that welcomes all winter decorations!

9 Founders Lane, Sandy Hook- Wins “Most Amazing”. This home is a perennial favorite. We live down the road from Rhonda and Chane Cullens, and my husband wants to put a sign in front of our house which reads, ”See 9 Founders Lane” with an arrow pointing their way.
The Cullens are very brave people. Every year they invite all 2,500+ of us to attend their annual house lighting party. Let’s surprise them by everyone attending next year! Special bonus for being a judge- they served us homemade chocolate chip cookies still warm from the oven!

Morgan Alyssa 26 Greenbriar Lane, Newtown – This was the first stop on the judging bus, and it set the tone for the rest of our trip. Their yard full of colorful inflatables brings out the child in all of us. They win “Most Delightful”.

Heather Orawsky 15 Sturges Road, Newtown I didn’t think this home could get any better than when I first saw it two years ago, but they really outdid themselves this year. They win the “Winter Wonderland” award!

Marie Gravesen Athans 20 Vining Rd., Sandy Hook A house that made me so happy I started the contest because I never would have known of this wall-to-wall extravaganza existed. One of my favorites, both inside and out! Vining again wins “Best Sugarplum Vision”

Karen Maday Smiley 2 Valley Field Road South, Sandy Hook Two of the cutest elves came out to board the bus and give us homemade cookies! Their beautiful home wins the “Nicer in Newtown Award” because families like theirs really do.

Traci Cron-Gehm 6 Paugussett Rd, Sandy Hook - Their massive front yard is home to my favorite inflatable ever! A trough of animated reindeer eating while Santa watches on. This lovely family set up a tent and waited for the judges with hot chocolate and goodie bags! How thoughtful! And not only that, Mr and Mrs Claus were there in person to wish all a good night. This home wins “Most Wonderful”!

Sharon Doherty PJ's Laundromat 110 Church Hill Rd Sandy Hook They win the “Nutcracker Sweet (Suite) Award” for their outstanding display of various nutcrackers that encircle their machines. If you are ever looking for a home for a nutcracker, consider donating it to this fantastic collection

Sarah Fox McGee 23 Buttonball Dr, Sandy Hook Husbands on the bus groan when some of the female judges on the bus say, “Can you line our roof with lights?” after seeing this charming home decorated with love. Buttonball wins “There’s No Place like Home” award.

Robert Zatulskis 50a Cedar Hill Rd.
This home wins the “Christmas Joy” award. It seemed to really capture the magic of December. It not only had candy canes and Santa, it also acknowledged the “reason behind the season”

Jennifer Bailey 70 South Main, Newtown
This home is the brightest spot on Main Street. It wins the best “Holiday Cheer” award. It makes me feel great every night when I pass it coming home from work.

Gail Lovorn 7 Butternut Ridge Newtown -
This stately home on top of a hill will receive the special Gold Star for its majestic display of the Nativity front and center. Newtown’s Gold Nativity Star will be hosted each year by a different home and family. In years to come, the Gold Star will travel across Newtown, much the same way the star of so long ago traveled across the sky in the middle east.

Marcia Brieant DeBrock 39 Platts Hill Road, Newtown
WOW! Someone joked this home should win “Most Extension Cords” because it seemed like every tree on the large property was lit-up, including the chicken coop.! But it wins the “WOW!” award because this is what you will say when you see it.

Monica Kozlowski Kwarcinski 162 Boggs Hill Road, Newtown
This lovely home wins the “Musical Fantasy” for having Christmas music playing (at a nice quiet background as to not disturb neighbors) as an added dimension to their impressive holiday decorating.

Amanda Lucas 33 elm drive, Newtown
Although a technical difficulty had Amanda scrambling to check circuit breakers, this home was lit and awesome by the time the judges bus arrived. There were a few inflatables as sad puddles on the ground, but the rest of the house was lit and awesome. It wins the Awesome Award.

Katelynn Clark 17 Oakview Road, Sandy Hook
With its welcoming porch this home wins “The Country Charm Award” for being so homey and inviting. Really captures the feelings of Christmas and family.

Anthony Capozziello 12 Sunnyview Terrace, Sandy Hook
An all-around local hero who runs the Sandy Hook Fire House Lobsterfest in the summer, during the winter Anthony Capossiello and his family string lights on their home. This home reminded me of the homes of my childhood and wins “Merry and Bright”!

Chris Capozziello 10 pilgrim la Sandy Hook
We have dueling brothers decorating for this year’s contest. This brother wins “Best Retro” for his use of big light bulbs. Chris, I am not using my blow molds this year, if you want to borrow them. It would complete your retro look!

Erin Siksay 75 Bennetts Bridge Rd. Sandy Hook
wins the “North Pole Award”. It’s a delightful childhood fantasy that’s a pleasure to look at, no matter your age.

Greg Fodor 3 Crown Hill Drive, Sandy Hook,
We LOVED the truck! This home wins “Most Unique” for decorating even the truck parked in the driveway. We think car dealers should sell trucks with the “lights package”. At least two men on the bus would pay for it.

Gavin Arneth 3 Settlers Lane.
Again, you guys win “Most Pumped Up”! I hope your father notes that your inflatables are award-winning for two years in a row.

Michael Copeland Please 17 Canterbury Lane Sandy Hook
The Copeland family wins “Most Outstanding”! Although we passed many beautiful homes, decorated in lovely ways in the Canterbury Lane neighborhood, # 17 really stood apart from her neighbors as something special.

Ron Kroha 23 Kent Road
wins “Most Elegant” A beautiful house, decorated in an elegant and tasteful manner. Truly lovely. I want them to adopt me.

Patty Cummins Cheh 11 Middleton Road
The all-out winter decorating in this home is both beautiful and whimsical and was the banner/group photo for the 2017 Contest. Middleton Road wins “Magic of the Season” award

Michael O'Sullivan 20 Jeremiah Rd
What can I say about a house that is totally covered in lights, like the Chevy Chase movie? This wins the new category- “The Christmas Vacation” award! FYI O’Sullivans - They sell Cousin Eddie mannequins here.

Melissa Vitka Kopcik 75 South Main St.
Sunoco Christmas Tree Although the town trees are growing, nothing comes close to the winner once again of “Best Outdoor Tree”. The star on top will serve as the awarded barnstar because I cannot sink a stake into the ground due to roots.

Donna Kroha 8 Baldwin Rd
With its bright lights this home wins the “Happy Holidays” Award because it makes you happy just to look at it.
