Newtown Storm Update: 20% Without Power, Warming Stations, Safety Tips

Newtown Storm Update January 20, 2019 (5 pm) – Important Information:

Regretfully, at present roughly 20% of our community is without power.

Eversource is focusing on a large outage in the area of Route 34 that is responsible for roughly 1,100 of the 2,300 reported outages.  There are about 80 total outage locations throughout town.  Eversource has confirmed additional crews will be arriving and they will be working through the evening.

Eversource said they have seen customers using aluminum ladders to remove ice from trees near power lines.  While the danger seems obvious to most, please do not do this.  Also, it is very icy outside so please be especially careful when walking outside.

Newtown’s First Selectman and the Emergency Management Office continue to urge residents to be safe and stay informed.

Safety First:

  • Avoid the use of candles due to the risk of fire if left unattended
  • Do not use outside cooking equipment inside
  • Keep generator exhaust away from residence
  • Stay away from power lines
