WCSU social sciences alumni return for panel discussion

The Western Connecticut State University Department of Social Sciences and the WCSU Alumni Association will host the Second Annual Social Sciences Alumni Discussion Panel from 4 to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, in Room 122 of White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St., Danbury.

According to Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Social Sciences Dr. R. Averell Manes, the panel will focus on “career opportunities, graduate school options, life skills and advice for students and prospective students of the social sciences.” Manes will moderate the discussion with alumni from graduating classes 15 years ago, five years ago, and recent graduates. Current WCSU students who attend the panel will receive extra credit from their professors in their social sciences courses. This event is free and open to the public.

The panel members are:

Kaylah (Leonard) Davis — Davis earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, with a focus on conflict resolution, from WCSU in May 2018. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Political Science from Southern New Hampshire University. She works in the academics department at Charter Oak State College in New Britain, managing and assisting with Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), a program that supports non-conventional students. Leah Juliett — Juliett currently serves as Social Media Associate at Lesbians Who Tech & Allies, a 50,000 person community of LGBTQ women, non-binary and trans individuals in tech. After graduating in December 2018, Juliett went on to serve as the writer for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats in Washington, D.C. Since 2016, Juliett has served as founder and executive director of the March Against Revenge Porn, an international justice campaign. Drew Shuptar-Rayvis — Shuptar-Rayvis graduated cum laude in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology. He is a 17th and 18th century Algonkian living historian, bringing Native American and colonial history to the public. As an Algonkian historian, Shuptar- Rayvis has consulted on and been featured in the films “Washington’s Armor” and “Rumors of War.” To learn more, contact Shuptar-Rayvis at dshup1000@aol.com.

Autumn Rain Towne — Towne received their Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from WCSU in 2005, and pursued graduate study in sociology at American University. They are the Digital Publications Coordinator for the American Physiological Society. Towne is also an activist and artist in Washington D.C., and co-runs a womxn’s health storytelling series called “Health’s Angels.”
