Newtown Police Welcome Newest Officer

We are pleased to introduce Newtown’s newest officer, Barry Hyvarinen who was sworn in today, October 15, 2021.

The 30 year old spent the last six years as a patrol officer in his home city, Fitchburg, Massachusetts.  When asked about the change he said, “I learned a lot in my time with the Fitchburg PD, but was looking for something closer to my family.  When I visited Newtown I really loved the atmosphere of the community and the police department.  I look forward to becoming part of the community here.”

“We are grateful to have Officer Hyvarinen join our ranks.  His experience will be helpful in the training process and he has a solid background.  I know he was a Field Training Officer in his previous department which is a lot of responsibility, and that speaks to his character and ability” said Sgt. Jeff Silver.

Over the next few months Officer Hvyarinen will attend an accelerated lateral police certification course, and then an internal field training program before being cleared for patrol.
