Join our VETERANS Book Group on 4 Wednesdays: October 26, November 2, 9 & 16 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm in the Genealogy Room (3rd floor). We are now reading Tribe by Sebastian Junger.
Tribe explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging, and the human quest for meaning. It explains the ironic fact that for many veterans war feels more comfortable than peace, adversity can turn out to be a blessing and disasters are sometimes remembered more fondly than weddings or tropical vacations.
Tribe explains why we are stronger when we unite together, and how that can be achieved even in today’s divided world.
The loss of closeness that comes at the end of deployment may explain the high rate of post-traumatic stress disorder suffered by military veterans today. Our natural instinct to belong to a small group defined by a clear purpose & understanding of each other defines the concept of a tribe. This tribal connection is often lost in modern society. Regaining it may be the key to our psychological survival.
