Newtown Letter to the Editor: Vote YES on amendments

On November 6, along with the candidates for office, there will be 2 amendments to the state constitution on the ballot. Both are important, and both deserve a YES vote.

Did you know that money for fixing highways, bridges and other transportation infrastructure can be used instead to plug holes in other parts of the state budget?   The 1st proposed amendment is for a transportation fund lock box, to make sure that the money set aside for transportation will be used for that purpose only. There is no cost to implementing this amendment, but there’s a huge cost if we don’t: there is a projected cumulative deficit of almost $100 billion in transportation funds by 2025. Let’s make sure Connecticut has the money to maintain our highways, bridges and other transportation infrastructure. Please vote YES on amendment #1.

Did you know that every year, Connecticut sells, swaps or gives away parcels of public land, without any input from the public? The 2nd proposed amendment would require a public hearing, and a 2/3 vote, before the state could dispose of your parks, beaches, forests and landmarks. Protect your public lands and keep Connecticut beautiful. Please vote YES on amendment #2.

Please remember to vote, and if you will not be able to get to the polls on November 6, pick up an absentee ballot.
