Newtown Fire Marshal Message Regarding Chimney Safety

A very important message from Richard Frampton, Fire Marshal and the five volunteer fire companies in Town.

Many dreams are made while watching a roaring fire on a cold day. Fireplaces and wood burning stoves can provide you with economical heat and a relaxed atmosphere. However, when these popular heating devices are not properly maintained, they can be a source of danger and possible disaster resulting in a chimney fire.

To understand what causes a chimney fire, you must first realize that when wood is burned, it gives off creosote, tars, and resins. These products of incomplete combustion collect in the flue liner. If these combustible products are allowed to build up - sooner or later they will ignite and burn vigorously inside the chimney. Many times, this type of fire initially goes undetected allowing the fire to spread quickly between the firebox and the top of the chimney. If there is a blockage in the chimney, the fire can spread into the house. Creosote ignites at 451 degrees and can get as high as 2,100 degrees within seconds.

This is why chimneys should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year by professionals who use wire brushes and hi-tech vacuum cleaners.
