Newtown Police Officer John McDermott Achieves Rank of Patrol Sergeant

Newtown Police announced on social media that 13-year veteran John McDermott had a formal swearing-in ceremony yesterday where he took the oath of office for his new role as a Patrol Sergeant.

Sgt. McDermott was officially promoted to the rank by unanimous vote of the Police Commission on 1/18/2022.  The vacancy was created by Sgt. Hynes who after nearly 27 years on the job has decided to retire effective February 1st.  Sgt. McDermott will conduct two weeks of on the job training in his new role before running a shift solo.  During his career thus far he has been heavily involved in community services such as the Cadet Program, Special Olympics, and crime prevention.  He has served as a Field Training Officer and has developed his skills as a first line supervisor coordinating the Cadet program and teaching new officers.

“Sgt. McDermott’s dedication to the community and to the development of others has always been apparent, and we look forward to having him part of the supervisory staff," said Sgt. Jeff Silver
