Newtown Police Sgt. Phil Hynes to Retire After 27 Years of Dedicated Service

Another familiar face has decided to hang up their gun belt and retire from the Newtown PD. Newtown native Sgt. Phil Hynes will start his retirement at 4 pm today after nearly 27 years of service.

He had a strong role model in his father, also Sgt. Phil Hynes who served the citizens of Trumbull for 35 years. The younger Hynes was involved in numerous different aspects of the department, with much of his attention directed at developing others. He was a field training officer, instructor, and mentor to many. He was the senior firearms instructor for many years and was instrumental in the advanced training that the members of the department received over the years. His ability as an instructor has won him several awards and the members of his shifts were always unified under his supervision.

“Things will be different without Phil around, but we will take the lessons that he has taught us all and keep moving forward. We wish you and your family the best in whatever adventure is next," said Sgt. Jeff Silver.
