It is appropriate that this week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, because Thursday marked an extra special day during a week in which the hard work and dedication of 911 telecommunicators is celebrated.
At 5:45 a.m. Thursday morning, veteran 911 dispatcher Matthew Ludwig of Norfolk answered his first 911 call of the day, resulting in him assisting with the birth of a healthy baby boy.
Ludwig immediately jumped into action providing mom and dad with instructions to assist with the birth of their son. He kept the parents calm, while giving instructions on supporting the baby's head and neck during delivery, tying the umbilical cord, and delivering the afterbirth. His supervisor says, "Matthew's 15 years of experience shined through. He handled the call with compassion and professionalism. Congratulations to all, and a job well done to Matt."
Matthew Ludwig also serves the community as Chief of the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department.
