The American Dream is alive and well at Pen Pies, located in nearby Danbury, Connecticut. Australian immigrants, Bernadette and John Hayes are trying to introduce the hand-held Aussie meat pies to America. They are a cross between an English beef potpie and an American hamburger and sold at Australian ball games the way hot dogs are sold at our ballparks. Aussie meat pies are so popular in Australia that there are approximately 315 million meat pies sold annually in a country with a population of only 24 million.
Meat pies are an iconic food of both Australia and New Zealand. John Hayes, who purchased commercial bread bakery Michelina’s, which delivers fresh bread to local restaurants and supermarkets throughout Fairfield Country, knew that once Americans tasted an Aussie meat pie, they’d be hooked. “They make a quick lunch for ‘on the go’, and teamed with a soup or a salad, an easy delicious dinner.”
John Hayes is also introducing his garlic bread, which he sold continent-wide to Pizza Hut and Dominos in his native Australia.
If you would like to try a Pen Pie Aussie Meat Pies, they are currently being sold in Palmer’s Market- Darien, Village Market- Wilton, Caraluzzi’s Markets, Hawleyville Deli- Newtown, 1st and 10 Sports Bar- New Milford, and Shell – North Street, Danbury.
