Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Ice Skating For Everyone!

Four questions with Emily Kelti, founder and CEO of Ice Skating For Everyone.

Why did you start your business?

I started the Pilot Program for Ice Skating for Everyone in the fall of 2019 to give underserved children the opportunity to learn to skate. In learning to skate, the students learn life lessons too— beginning with how to fall and pick yourself up.  And with the mastery of new skills, their self-confidence soars. We play games for added fun too.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our service is basically teaching skating. We also offer opportunities for high school mentors to teach the students and form friendships.  Many mentors call their experience with Ice Skating for Everyone “life-changing.” Plus mentors earn community service credits at their schools and colleges and honor society recommendations (as well as much to write about for college essays.)

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We are supported by the Horizons programs at New Canaan Country School and Norwalk Community College, the Darien Ice House, and Sono Ice House.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

After three years, we’re imagining our business, not reimagining it, though we make tweaks along the way.
