About Juneteenth

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a national holiday that commemorates the June 19,1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Officially celebrated on June 19, the word is a combination of "June" and "nineteenth".  Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 45 of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The only states that do not recognize this special day are Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota and South Dakota.
