Sounds of Liberty Square

Norwalk 2.0 is proud to launch THE SOUNDS OF LIBERTY SQUARE, a Tuesday night concert of local indie music at the Pink Shipping Containers located in Constitution Park. Constitution Park is located at the foot of the Stroffolino Bridge next to Liberty Square.

July 24 Glenn Roth and Belle of the Fall will perform at the containers starting at 6:30 pm. Norwalk 2.0 is announcing the launch of Iconic Norwalk 2018, the second year of the Instagram contest that resulted in over 900 submissions of iconic locations in Norwalk with 19 entries winning prizes in categories ranging from food to architecture. The winning entries of last year’s project are on exhibit at the Containers.

As part of the summer’s public art exhibits, Norwalk 2.0 is also asking artists to submit projects that on the norwalk2.org website that create artworks about the Norwalk harbor. Taking inspiration from the work of historical depictions of Norwalk’s working harbor, Norwalk 2.0 is launching this project as an on-going public art project documenting the current state of the harbor before the massive public works projects alter the harbor and Liberty Square.

Norwalk 2.0 also plans to include a series of pop-up arts and retail experiences that invite creative expression into the heart of the Liberty Square and help celebrate the vibrant Norwalk waterfront.

“We are inviting artists of all disciplines to apply for a two-week art project that explores the harbor using words, visuals or sounds. The containers can be used as an exhibit area or workshop area” said Jackie Lightfield, co-founder of Norwalk 2.0.

Liberty Square, which connects the East Norwalk with parts of South Norwalk via the Stroffolino bridge over the Norwalk River, has been a vital part of Norwalk's growth. Norwalk 2.0’s ongoing projects aim to encourage Norwalk residents to enjoy the last months of the cultural significance of Norwalk’s harbor history before the State of Connecticut commences work on the Walk Bridge that requires the destruction of the Imax Theater, buildings at Liberty Square and the Walk Bridge itself.

The project goal is to create a series of arts events and exhibits that speak to the historic economic vibrancy of Liberty Square Norwalk and catalyze an artistic hub. Recently moving to Liberty Square is SoNo JAM (203 Liberty Square), an arts and music organization that invites children to explore their world through music enrichment and art process. Also, recently locating to Liberty Square is the Norwalk Seaport Association, who operate boat tours to the Sheffield Lighthouse in the Long Island Sound.

Norwalk 2.0 thanks the Third Taxing District for supporting public art and the maritime history of Norwalk.

Norwalk 2.0, a community and economic development organization dedicated to bringing people back to heart of Norwalk’s downtown, has received funding support from the Department of Economic and Community Development, Connecticut Office of the Arts, the Daphne Seybolt Culpeper Foundation, the Maurice Goodman Foundation and the Aiello Charitable Fund.

Norwalk 2.0’s mission is to engage residents, businesses and community organizations to work together and create an authentic, creative, economically diverse and sustainable future.

Norwalk 2.0 is part of a growing national movement that leverages technology to increase social engagement in and participation in communities. Gov 2.0, Code for America and Startup America all focus on delivering tech tools to local organizations and communities to enable better and more efficient ways of making communities better.
