The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the arts and culture across the 15 towns in our region of coastal Fairfield County and each Wednesday issues our free E-Buzz newsletter with a selection of the hundreds of events posted to our website by our members. This weekend, the air will be filled with holiday cheer, festive fun and so much more.
Feeling festive? Start your weekend on The Great Lawn at Pequot Library on Friday at 5:00 pm with a Caroling Party and Open House for an evening of holiday cheer, music, treats, horse drawn carriage rides, and a surprise visit from the North Pole!
There’s nothing like a Fairfield County tradition to keep your holiday spirit shining, so be sure to catch the New England Academy of Dance and New England Dance Theater presentation of The Nutcracker Ballet. Friday through Sunday at New Canaan High School, this year’s production features the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jonathan Yates and over 100 dancers from communities across Fairfield and Westchester counties, including students from the New England Academy of Dance and professional guest artists from New York City.
For a wickedly entertaining evening on Friday and Saturday at 8pm, the Ridgefield Theater Barn is bringing back a special holiday edition of their Cabaret Piano Bar. This biannual event is filled with live music, talented performers, and good company - where you may even be shaken out of your comfort zone to hop on the stage yourself. Invited singers will offer up their favorites while encouraging the audience to sing songs almost everyone knows by heart. Unpredictable laughter is guaranteed.
More laughs can be found at Norwalk’s Music Theatre of Connecticut from Friday through Sunday in the one-woman comedy, Who’s Holiday!, written by Matthew Lombardo. This comedy features ‘Cindy Lou Who’ many years after How The Grinch Stole Christmas, as she drinks, jokes, and stumbles her way through the rocky retelling of her life. Friday 8pm; Saturday, 2pm & 8pm; Sunday at 2pm. Adults only.
Find special hand-crafted gifts on Saturday and Sunday at Silvermine Gallery from 10am to 4pm. The Silvermine Seasonal Sale & Fundraiser is packed with art and crafts for sale, created by Silvermine School of Art students and instructors. You will find ceramics, paintings, sculptures, prints, jewelry, drawings, photographs, fiber arts, cards, ornaments, wearable arts and more. Your purchases support Silvermine and a portion of the proceeds will go towards the Silvermine School of Art Scholarship Fund.
If you’re looking for a fun family activity, join Stepping Stones Museum for Children on Saturday at 10:30 am or 1:30 pm where The Kids Komedian “Mr. Joel” presents a fun and fast-paced variety show, delighting the crowd with music, magic and hilarious comedy.
Another great family activity can be found at The Wilton Historical Society’s Great Trains Holiday Show. If you get there on Saturday between 11am and 2pm, you’ll have a chance to see renowned silhouette artist Deborah O’Connor at work. Deborah creates individual portraits cut entirely freehand from paper, using scissors as her only tool. Pose for a silhouette that Deborah will create in a matter of minutes for the perfect holiday gift. As a bonus, you may even catch a special guest from the North Pole while you’re there.
For a little evening cheer, throw on your best 70’s garb and celebrate “The Best of the ’70s” presented by SHU Community Theatre on Saturday at 7:30 pm,. This show features the greatest music of all time with DizzyFish performing timeless songs of artists like Neil Young, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Elton John, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and more!
At FTC’s StageOne in Fairfield, join New Paradigm Theatre Company on Saturday at 8pm or Sunday at 3pm for its annual extravaganza. This holiday show is jam-packed with Broadway dancers, singers, instrumentalists, and “Ms Clauz with a Z”© and her elves. Music Directed by Chris Coogan, Directed by Kristin Huffman.
The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, in Norwalk’s Mathews Park, is where you will want to be on Sunday 3-5pm as Play With Your Food presents “Seasons Readings.” The program includes Wolcott Gibb’s “Ring Out Wild Bells”, an hilarious take on a Christmas pageant at Riverdale Country School, Suzanne Zelitch’s “I Had a Little Dreidel”, a poignant reflection on being your true self even while traveling in uncharted lands; “Geek Week” by Rebecca O’Connell, a holiday tale about two kids who bond at camp and discover they have more than a love of science in common; and Ray Bradbury’s little-known gem, “The Gift”, which shoots us into outer space on Christmas Eve. View the award-winning holiday exhibit at the mansion prior to the performance, and meet the artists after the show. Delicious refreshments included.
