Opera returns to the Norwalk Concert Hall with The Magic Flute

Opera returns to the Norwalk Concert Hall with The Magic Flute by the Norwalk Symphony, chorus and soloists on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 7:30PM.

One of Mozart’s last great works, this opera is both profound and comedic in ways that appeal to young and old alike!

The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The allegorical plot concerns the initiation of Prince Tamino (Derrek Stark). Enlisted by the Queen of the Night (Erica Miller) to rescue her daughter Pamina (Amelia Watkins) from the high priest Sarastro (Matthew Anchel), Tamino comes to admire the high ideals of the latter and he and Pamina both join Sarastro's community, while the Queen and her allies are vanquished. Other leading characters are Papageno (Brian Myer), Papagena: Natalie Trumm, the Three Ladies (Deborah Lifton, Mary Petro Noonan and Elizabeth Pojanowski, and Monostatos (Max Zander).

Christopher Mirto returns as our Stage Director after successful collaborations on Carmen (2014), la Boheme (2016) and Marriage of Figo (2018). He is currently on the opera faculty at Oberlin Conservatory, specializing in new and contemporary operas, and directs Oberlin’s New Opera Commissioning Program, which he also launched.

Earthplace, in Westport, will join in greeting guests in the lobby with animals from their collection that are like those in the show. They will also participate in the (Not) Just for Kids programs held at various locations on May 12 and 13th.

Norwalk Concert Hall at 125 East Avenue. Individual tickets range $10 for students and children and $50 for adults and can be purchased online at the Symphony’s website, www.norwalksymphony.org, or by calling the Symphony office at 203.956.6771.
