"The 39 Steps" Opens at MTC MainStage

Music Theatre of Connecticut MainStage, Fairfield County’s professional award-winning theatre company, continues its 31st Season with The 39 Steps adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan from the movie by Alfred Hitchcock. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre!

The 2008 Drama Desk Award and 2-time Tony® Award Winner The 39 Steps is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of four), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance! In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale! A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure!

The 39 Steps features a talented cast of four playing over 150 unique and silly characters. Making her debut at MTC, Laura Cable will be appearing as Annabella/Margaret/Pamela and others. Laura has appeared with the National Tours of CATS and Damn Yankees. Some of her regional credits include August: Osage County, Mary Poppins, Victor/Victoria, and The Sound of Music. An MTC favorite will make his way back to our MainStage, Matt Densky will be appearing as Clown 2. At MTC he has appeared in The Santaland Diaries (Crumpet) and in last season’s End of the Rainbow.  NYC credits include performing Young Max in How the Grinch Stole Christmas at MSG and originating Sky in Kris Kringle at the Town Hall. He has performed leading roles at numerous regional theatres across the country. Another actor making his MTC debut,Gary Lindemann will be appearing as Hannay. His Broadway shows include Phantom of the Opera and Anything Goes. He toured with Disney’s High School Musical, tapped traveling with Anything Goes and rocked with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra as a soloist. TV credits include Quantico, Law & Order, SVU, Law & OrderOne Life to Live and All My Children. 

The final member of the cast of The 39 Steps is our very own MTC co-founder Jim Shilling who will be appearing as Clown 1. Jim has served as teaching artist, Artist in Residence, director, general manager, actor, producer and currently as Director of the School of Performing Arts and MTC’s Managing Director. Acting credits include John Guare’s A Day for SurprisesUpper Broadway at Westport Country Playhouse, Hamlet with Tony Roberts, and South Pacific with Jamie Farr. He has appeared numerous times on the MTC MainStage Jacques Brel is Alive and Well..., It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, Doubt, Almost, Maine, God of Carnage, The Fantasticks, and A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play.

Pam Hill directs The 39 Steps. The creative team includes set design by Jordan Janota, lighting by Michael Blagys and costumes by Diane Vanderkroef.

  • Performances are March 2nd - 18th, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm and Sunday at 2pm.
