Norwalk Public Schools Celebrate National School Breakfast Week

National School Breakfast Week kicks off across the country March 5-9. This year’s theme is “I Heart School Breakfast.” To celebrate the most important meal of the day, NPS Superintendent Dr. Steven Adamowski will join elementary school students and parents for breakfast at Marvin, Silvermine and Jefferson.

While busy weekday mornings often make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast, the US Department of Agriculture data show that more and more students are starting their day with a nutritious breakfast at school. NPS kicked off a “grab and go” breakfast program last year, and continues to expand the program as part of the 2016-2019 Strategic Operating Plan goal to increase student participation and ensure all students start their day ready to learn and succeed.

Breakfast carts are already available at Brookside, Kendall, Fox Run, Silvermine, Jefferson, Tracey, Rowayton, Cranbury and Wolfpit. Over the next month, carts will be available to students at West Rocks, Marvin, Columbus, Ponus, and Naramake. The program will expand to Brien McMahon High School, Norwalk High School, Nathan Hale Middle School and Roton Middle School during the 2018-2019 school year.

In honor of National School Breakfast week, NPS food service provider Whitsons Culinary Group will run a “lucky bag day” throughout the week where elementary school students who receive breakfast from the school will be entered to win a creative drawing tablet. Four creative drawing tablets per school will be provided to lucky winners.

Each day, NPS serves lunch to over 7,400 students across the district. Of those students, 4,100 receive free or reduced lunch.
