Royal Nonesuch Humor Writing Contest Deadline Extended!

The Mark Twain House & Museum has extended the deadline for its 2018 Royal Nonesuch Humor Writing Contest to July 15, 2018

The contest is meant to celebrate Mark Twain's legacy as of one of America's leading humorists and to encourage writers of all ages and from all over the world to put pen to paper. So send us your side-splitting submissions soon and become eligible to win one of our cash prizes!

The finalist judges for this year's contest are Michael Ian BlackSusan HarlanHank Herman, and Julie Schumacher, all of whom know funny when they see it. 

We accept entries in two categories:

  • Adult (age 18 or older at the time of submission) at $23 per entry
  • Young Writer (age 17 or younger at time of submission) at $10 per entry. 

Multiple submissions are welcome, but EACH SUBMISSION MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A SEPARATE ENTRY FEE. 

Entry fees support the preservation of the Hartford, Connecticut home where Mark Twain lived from 1874 to 1891, during which time he wrote his greatest works. 

All writing must be original, no longer than 7,000 words, and (most important) hilarious. Cash prizes will be awarded to a first-place winner and two runners-up in each category: First Prize in each category is $1,000; Second Prize in each category is $500; Third Prize in each category is $250.



Submissions will be accepted through July 15, 2018. 

Winners will be announced on September 10, 2018.

The Mark Twain House & Museum is the restored Hartford, Connecticut home where American author Samuel Clemens -- Mark Twain -- and his family lived from 1874 to 1891. Twain wrote his most important works, including Adventures of Huckleberry FinnThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, during the years he lived there. In addition to providing tours of Twain's restored home, a National Historic Landmark, the institution offers activities and education programs that illuminate Twain's literary legacy and provide information about his life and times.
