With an ongoing partial shutdown of the Federal Government, some federal employees are working without pay or have been furloughed until further notice. The City of Norwalk would like to remind federal employees of the state and local resources available to help in these difficult times.
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont recently announced a plan that would provide interest-free bank loans to federal workers who aren’t eligible for unemployment checks. The United Way is also working to assist furloughed federal workers. Those affected by the shutdown are encouraged to contact the Human Relations and Fair Rent Department at (203) 854-7989 for assistance in identifying resources available to help during the shutdown.
Person-to-Person, a community-supported agency that provides emergency assistance for basic needs, is waiving income guidelines for its food pantry for federal employees affected by the shutdown. Those in need can access the food pantry to receive seven days of food for the size of the family, covering three meals per day, by showing their federal employee ID card. Clothing and financial assistance are also available.
“Many people live paycheck to paycheck, and without their expected income, they might be forced to choose between paying the mortgage, buying groceries, or filling a prescription. That is not a decision anyone should have to make,” said Norwalk Mayor Harry W. Rilling. “I am thankful for the resources available here in Norwalk through our Human Relations Department, and for the wonderful organizations, like Person-to-Person, that do so much for our community.”
“I hope those who need assistance will reach out. We will be responsive to anyone who contacts us,” said Person-to-Person Executive Director Ceci Maher. “We can be available over the three-day weekend; we are here for people who need help.”
