RVNAhealth Today: Parkinson’s Awareness Month

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month – a time dedicated to acknowledging those living with Parkinson’s disease and working to find a cure. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor (movement) functions in the individual. Those with PD may experience tremors, limb rigidity, difficulty walking, or balance issues. According to Parkinson.org, Parkinson’s disease currently affects one million Americans, and the numbers keep increasing. This number is expected to reach 1.2 million by the year 2030.

While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, there are certainly treatment options available to those who suffer from its symptoms. The RVNAhealth Rehabilitation and Wellness Center has an excellent team of physical, occupational and speech therapists, many certified in LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) to accurately aid those with PD. We also offer in-home services where a therapist will come to your home for treatment.

Beginning May 3rd, our Rehabilitation and Wellness Center (located at our Ridgefield location) will be offering BIG for LIFETM and LOUD for LIFETM classes every Tuesday and Thursday, designed to help those with PD increase their movement and combat struggles related to PD. LOUD for LIFETM classes, to be held on Tuesdays, will focus on vocal exercises to maintain effective communication. BIG for LIFETM classes, to be held on Thursdays, will include a set of exercises and activities designed to help practice functional movements.

Also, be sure to attend RVNAhealth’s 47th Annual Wellness Fair on May 7th at East Ridge Middle School in Ridgefield where you can speak with our rehabilitation team in person!
