Norwalk Symphony and Two Local Ballet Companies Dance Around the World

Norwalk Symphony Opens Season "Dancing Around the World" on Saturday, September 24th at 7:30 pm

“Dance transcends cultural boundaries, continents and centuries,” says Norwalk Symphony Conductor Jonathan Yates. “We’ll take you to the steppes of ancient Russia with Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with full orchestra and members of Thomas/Ortiz Dance Company. Our tour will also visit the pampas of Argentina with Alberto Ginastera’s Estancia, the Far East with Chen Yi’s Romance and Dance, and finally urban USA with Daniel Bernard Roumain’s Hip-Hop Essay for Orchestra, with dancers from the East Coast Contemporary Ballet.”

“This will be an evening of color and contrasts. Come and enjoy.”

Since 1939, the Norwalk Symphony has enhanced the quality of life of Southwestern Connecticut by offering full seasons of classical music with professional musicians and visiting artists. Jonathan Yates, Music Director and Conductor, is celebrating his twelfth season with the Symphony.

The Symphony often partners with other local arts institutions. Barely a season in recent years has gone by without the meticulously trained young performers from the New England Academy of Dance (NEAD) taking the stage. In Rite of Spring we expand this collaboration and welcome professional dancers from the Thomas/Ortiz Dance company, founded by NEAD leader Ted Thomas and Frances Ortiz. For its opening concert, the Symphony also welcomes the East Coast Contemporary Ballet for the first-time with a performance reflecting their mission of pushing the boundaries of contemporary dance while at the same time utilizing the aesthetic of classical ballet.
