New Canaan Community Foundation Supports Norwalk Youth

Continuing its decades of support, the New Canaan Community Foundation awarded the Carver Foundation of Norwalk a grant of $10,000 to support its after-school Youth Development Program.

“This most generous gift is a great boost to Carver’s efforts to ‘Build Lifetime Achievers’ as Carver prepares for the 2019-2020 school year,” said Novelette Peterkin, Carver’s CEO.  “The New Canaan Community Foundation is vital to the continued health and growth of Carver’s work, both the community foundation’s people and its financial resources.”

Carver after-school Program Coordinators are certified teachers from the students’ respective Norwalk schools. Carver values each student’s abilities, talents, interests, and learning styles. Volunteers from New Canaan serve on Carver’s Board of Directors and join many others, including collaborating nonprofit organizations, in strengthening Carver programs such as providing enrichment opportunities like robotics and pre-engineering. Carver provides students with free transportation. Carver offers services not available during the school day and collaborates regularly with school day teachers and administrators to assess individual student needs and progress.

Carver’s core principles include high expectations with the goal of graduating high school on-time and college-ready; academic rigor focused on project-based learning and individualized learning; building healthy relationships; student voice and taking responsibility; building community through defined structures of cooperative decision-making; and a youth development approach to instruction that recognizes individual strengths, needs, and learning styles.
