Norwalk Resident Honored with Service Distinction at New Canaan Country School

Carlos Mendoza of Norwalk was presented with the Shirley and Jonathan O’Herron Faculty Award at New Canaan Country School’s Annual Meeting & Dinner Thursday, Sept 19. This biennial award honors a faculty or staff member who has shown extraordinary dedication to the school and to the students, and has taught or worked at the school for at least 10 years.

Over 400 parents and 160 members of faculty and staff attended the event which featured a seated dinner and remarks from Head of School Aaron Cooper and Board President Randy Salvatore, both of New Canaan, as well as a celebration of faculty and staff who reached significant service milestones.

The Shirley and Jonathan O’Herron Faculty Award was established in November 2013 through a bequest from the estate of Jonathan O’Herron and at the direction of the children of Shirley and Jonathan O’Herron:  Anne O’Herron Burleigh of Darien, Sarah O’Herron Casey ’80 of New Canaan and Jonathan O’Herron Jr. of Westport. Shirley and Jonathan O’Herron were the proud grandparents of 11 Country School students.

“Through his strong sense of putting others first, he has built lasting relationships with teachers, staff members, students and families. In his nearly 30 years here, Carlos has always stepped in when needed.

Carlos’ work brings to mind words such as; dedication, reliability, caring, excellence and supportive,” said Mr. Cooper when presenting Mr. Mendoza the award.

Mr. Mendoza originally came to Country School in 1991 as a member of the cafeteria staff. After 11 years in the cafeteria, he joined the facilities team in 2002, and continues to be a valued member of the team.

“From that time until now, he has continued to embody a strong sense of purpose and a love for working with people,” said Mr. Cooper. “One cannot underestimate the value that someone with this type of character and work ethic brings to the school. He is a proud and committed member of the Country School community who models everything we stand for and believe.”
