Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.
You're IT Downunder!
Three questions with Kim Hawkins, owner of Downunder.
Why did you start your business?
Downunder is the only operation of its kind in Connecticut – three locations, on-water, retail and rental of stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), sit-on-top kayaks, and all the equipment, fashions and accessories that go with them.
I started my business to provide an affordable, safe and fun activity for all ages, particularly families, children and the under-served. Downunder makes getting out on the water easy, we also provide instruction, guided tours, and activities such as yoga, and birthday parties. Our motto is "give it a go".
Best selling product/service?
Paddleboards and children's camps. Paddlers in our Westport camps get to experience all of our demo boards, even the racing ones! At our Rowayton location, paddlers cover lots of ‘ground’ and even get to visit the nearby islands! Weed Beach in Darien features plenty of islands, coves, and harbors, including Vincent Island and Holly Pond, to keep campers excited and exploring throughout the week. Downunder also offers Paddle with your Pup. Learn more here.
How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
At least eight - Saugatuck Sweets, Brendans 101, Rowayton Pizza, Rowayton Market, Rowayton Seafood, Garelick and Herb, Embody, Saugatuck Rowing.
