Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You’re IT Village Bagels!

Three questions with Darren Monaco, owner of Village Bagels.

Why did you start your business?

Village Bagels was first established on August 10th, 1995.  I wanted to open a bagel shop in the Fairfield County area that sold "Real New York" style bagels. I worked in a New York bagel shop since the age of 13. I had the knowledge and drive to make my vision a reality.

At a young age, I realized in the real world you have to do something you're passionate about. You need to do what it is you love doing and make a career out of it. Then, work doesn't really feel like work. I love my job! I love the interaction with people.

I love when people tell me that ours was one of the best bagels or best sandwiches they have ever eaten. It’s a great validation to the hard work of our entire staff!

What is your best selling product?

For us, it would be the plain bagel. They are delicious. Served with cream cheese (and with or without smoked salmon), or creating the perfect bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich or one of our signature lunch sandwichs, the Turkey Club, the plain bagel is a winner. Coupled this with amazing customer service!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business? Can you name them?

As far as local businesses, I try to shop small whenever I can! For over 25 years, we have purchased our apparel from a Cook Print and have been for over 25 yrs. Agron's Barbershop keeps us well groomed (Agron who is a third generation barber). Lastly, sports talk is pretty key in my shop and A to Z Variety has every sports magazine imaginable!
