Malta House Officially Opens New Norwalk Home for Mothers and Babies

On June 3, 2021, at 10:30 AM, Malta House will officially open the doors to their beautiful new home for mothers and babies at 139 West Rocks Road. Malta House is holding this “by invitation, only” ribbon-cutting celebration in conjunction with a longtime community partner, the Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce, and officiated by Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling.

After 23 years at 5 Prowitt Street, Malta House is packing their belongings and planning to move to their new home, in mid-June, at 139 West Rocks Road, after an extensive building renovation resulting from a $5MM capital campaign.

In pursuit of building stronger families and thriving communities, Malta House is moving into a larger building in Norwalk that will enable them to increase their impact for the next 20 years and beyond. The new home, a former convent of All Saints Catholic School campus in Norwalk, has more bedrooms and larger rooms, enabling them to help break the cycle of homelessness and intergenerational poverty for even more young women and their children. The growth into the newly renovated home will increase their capacity to serve mothers and babies by 50%. They will offer more classes and services to single mothers outside of the residential program and provide more staff offices, a spacious nursery for both infants and toddlers, and family suites that allow them to welcome a mother with two children. Additionally, the new building has a beautiful Chapel for reflection, prayer, adoration, and Mass, and open space for fresh air and playtime for the little ones. Carey Dougherty, Executive Director reflects, “I have spent many Saturdays at our new home with various groups of volunteers, all generously giving up a morning to roll up their sleeves and assemble cribs, move furniture, put chairs and tables together, and decorate bedrooms. What a gift it has been to see such hands-on acts of love and kindness. We are grateful to everyone who has played a part in creating this very special home. We could never have done this without their support."

Founded in 1998, Malta House is truly unique in Connecticut, and one of only about 400 maternity homes throughout the country. They are a 24-hour care facility opened 365 days per year, providing wrap-around, supportive services in a loving home environment for up to 18 months for both mothers and their babies. These services include support in core areas of parenting, childcare, health and nutrition, budgeting and finance, employment coaching, education, individual therapy, and spirituality. Though founded upon and guided by their Catholic faith, Malta House’s doors are open to any homeless, pregnant, or parenting woman who needs care and love. Since 1998, Malta House has served 338 courageous moms and welcomed 356 beautiful babies.
